Just Text Me! (Is e-mail going the way of the buffalo?)

I have been asked why I have not written an article in while, so here is some food for thought.
With the invention of websites like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and other networking sites there are rumors going around that email will become a thing of the past. Do you think that these networking sites will be the death of email? I don’t, and here is why. To sign-up for any of these accounts you must provide a valid email address. This email is used to send notifications and event reminders as well as private messages and reset passwords. The chat clients like yahoo and msn have not been able to kill email and I suspect that networking sites will not either.
What about SMS (Short Message Service) or MMS (Multi – Media Service) you ask? SMS and MMS are used by mobile networks for texting, and are a form of email. SMS has built in limitations, it can be no longer than 160 characters, and contain only plain text. Where MMS (more widely used today) can carry pictures and video, hyperlinks, ECT. and It can use email protocols and servers to send its text messages. For example you can send an email to your phone (depending on your provider) by simply sending it to an email address like this example 1235559089@verizon.message.com, showing that the invention of the SMS is only using email technology to send data to its recipients. So the next time you hear someone say “email is so yesterday” just smile and say “Just TEXT it to me”.
